Let’s explore how designer Hitarth Suthar transformed everyday space challenges into a smart, wall-mounted study solution for modern homes.
It all started with the thought of designing a study table that is truly needed in Indian compact homes. In India, around 80% of homes are compact, and dedicating permanent space for a study table is a big challenge, especially for work that is done only for two to three hours a day. So, I took this challenge to save space in Indian homes by designing a smarter study table.
I started analysing study tables both online and offline. During my research, I found wall-mounted foldable study tables that really save space by folding away when not in use. But I noticed one major problem — users have to remove all their study items before folding the table. Another problem was organizing more items on a small tabletop. In compact homes, there is often no space for a large table, but if users buy a smaller table, they cannot organize all the things they really need.
Now I had four important points to consider while designing this study table:
The width should not be more than 2 feet so it can fit comfortably in Indian homes.
The product should save users time by allowing them to fold the table without removing all the study items.
The table should help users organize more items while still keeping the size compact.
Affordability had to remain a key focus so more people could use the product.
Considering all these points along with affordability, I decided to use a metal sheet cover combined with an engineered wooden tabletop. This helped provide extra space for organizing items while keeping the design practical and compact.
I loved this idea because it gave me more flexibility while designing the table. I designed unique slots on the cover sides to hold rods in place. These rods prevent books or pages from falling, allowing people to read or copy from extra books and notebooks more comfortably. It also indirectly saves time because users can simply unfold the cover while using the table, and later close the cover and fold the table without removing all the items inside.
This allows children and working people to store books, laptops, and other study materials within the table and cover itself. My challenge of designing a highly functional study table within a 2-foot width was finally completed.
It took more than 48 hours of continuous thinking and problem-solving to design this table. But after creating it, I felt happiness in my soul because I had designed something that could help far more people than I ever imagined.
